Betty's Run For ALS 2004
$225,000.00 raised at the 8th annual Betty’s Run for ALS
1,000 people clapped and cheered at the announcement that $225,000.00 was raised at this year’s Betty’s Run for ALS. The dollars raised will help provide services and equipment to those with ALS as well as funds for research.
Thank you Rick Wilson, for sharing your courage, humour and wisdom. Thank you Wendy Crewson, for embracing not just the cause but also those with ALS, their families, ALS volunteers and staff. Thank you to the amazing Run committee, for your unending dedication and commitment. And thank you to each and every one who collected the pledges and then wheeled, walked or ran.
About the Run
Betty Norman was a very active 58-year-old Calgary woman who was diagnosed
with ALS in August of 1996. Her courage and determination to make a
difference inspired the 1997 "This One's for Betty" walk/run. Sadly, Betty
passed away at her home in July 1997, less than one year from diagnosis, and
two weeks following the fundraising run that she inspired.
Now in its 8th year, Betty's Run for ALS has raised over $1 Million to fight
this dreadful disease, thanks to the participation and generosity of caring
people, just like you. Money raised through donations not only benefits ALS
research and awareness, but also provides much needed equipment and support
to patients who are now facing its daily challenges. Since 1998, the
demand for the Society's services in Alberta has more than tripled and we
anticipate the communities' needs to continue to rise.
Wendy Crewson, Canadian born actor and Gemini winner for her role as Sue
Rodriguez in the movie "At the End of the Day", will join us once again as
Patron at his year's run. The Betty's Run Committee invited Wendy to be a
Patron of the run in 1999. She continues to be supportive of our cause.
Wendy, our 2003 Ambassador Chris Mann, and a number of other very dedicated
Betty's Run committee members and volunteers banded together in February of
2003 to produce three television public service announcements for ALS
awareness and fund raising. These PSA's are currently being broadcast on
national television.
This year's run is dedicated to Betty's memory, to other loved ones who have
been taken from us by this terrible disease, and to those people currently
living with ALS. Through your support of Betty's Run there can be hope . .
. . hope for today that there will be equipment and support services
available for those suffering now . . . . and hope for tomorrow, that a cure
for ALS will be found soon. By working together, a world without ALS can be
a reality.
