Hospice & Palliative Care

A hospice is a program designed to care for the dying and their special needs.  Among these services all hospice programs should include:

  1. Control of pain and other symptoms through medication, environmental adjustment and education.
  2. Psychosocial support for both the patient and family, including all phases from diagnosis through bereavement.
  3. Medical services commensurate with the needs of the patient.
  4. Interdisciplinary "team" approach to patient care, patient and family support, and education with physician leadership.
  5. Integration into existing facilities where possible.
  6. Specially trained personnel with expertise in care of the dying and their families.

Palliative care is the active compassionate treatment and care of people with a terminal illness and for those who are close to them. Besides medical care and pain management to improve the quality of life by controlling the symptoms of the disease, palliative care centres provide psychosocial and spiritual support to assist with grief and bereavement. This care is provided in a number of locations including your home if that is where you would like to stay and if it is medically possible for you to do so. The different health regions in Alberta have a range of programs so that as your condition changes, you can get the help you need.
