Making It Possible #15 – Dennis Rommel

When Dennis Rommel first shared his story with us in 2020, he spoke about the shock of receiving an ALS diagnosis and the importance of appreciating each day. A year later, as the Edmonton Walk Ambassador, he shared his gratitude for the support of family, friends, healthcare professionals, and the ALS community.
Now, nearly six years after his diagnosis, Dennis continues to inspire those around him with his resilience, perspective, and determination to make the most of every day.
Throughout his journey, he has remained focused on what matters most: time with his wife Lorna and family, the support of friends, and the moments that bring joy and connection. While ALS has changed many aspects of life, it has not changed his appreciation for the people who have stood beside him every step of the way.
This year, Dennis is once again supporting the Side by Side for ALS Edmonton Walk. Together with family and friends, he has assembled a team to raise funds and awareness for people living with ALS. As part of his efforts, a talented friend created a special cornflower painting that will be auctioned in support of the ALS Society of Alberta. The cornflower, the international symbol of ALS, represents hope, remembrance, and solidarity with those affected by the disease.
Over the years, Dennis has often reflected on a quote that has guided him through his ALS journey:
“One day at a time. That is enough.”
His story is a reminder that while ALS presents enormous challenges, there is still purpose to be found in supporting others, creating memories, and living each day with gratitude. We are thankful to Dennis for continuing to share his journey and for helping make a difference for families across Alberta.
