Making It Possible #18 – Araceli Caba

Araceli was a nurse for two decades. She is profoundly grateful to have been in this role of giving and supporting.
Despite receiving a devastating diagnosis of ALS just months ago, Araceli continues to feel immense gratitude in her life. She balances the heaviness of living with ALS by focusing on the things that she says ALS cannot take away from her, such as the relationships she has with her partner, her friends, and her family.
She is also grateful for quiet moments when she reflects on her journey with ALS, and she is appreciative of the practical help and support in the form of equipment.
Araceli is grateful that she will have the opportunity to let others know how much they mean to her. She is committed to being in the moment when she spends time with others and embraces these moments with an open heart. She says these moments help her to face the scary moments.
In these times of connection, she discovers what kind of support is helpful to her. With grace and honesty, she openly shares this with those who support her so they can best know how to be of help.
To those who care for someone living with ALS, Araceli suggests that holding space with them is a gift…no ‘rescuing or judging’ just be there in the moment…
For Araceli, being ‘strong’ while living with ALS includes acknowledging the emotions that arise. She believes that pent up emotions only increase suffering. She calls this ‘joining with her journey’ and Araceli is open to seeing where it will take her on any given day.
More recently, and with the help of equipment on loan from the ALS Society, Araceli’s journey included special outings. The use of a Travel Buggy allowed Araceli to enjoy exploring Fish Creek Park with her partner. Earlier in the Spring, it gave her immense pride and joy to attend her son’s concert and watch him perform.
With gratitude in her heart, Araceli looks forward to creating more meaningful moments with those special to her.
