Standing Together: Chestermere Firefighters Spark a Wave of Support for ALS
A 72-hour campout. A colleague living with ALS. And a community showing just how powerful it can be when people come together!
Chestermere firefighters are taking on a 72-hour campout in support of one of their own, raising funds and awareness for ALS. With more than $32,000 raised against an original $20,000 goal, their efforts have already grown beyond what they set out to achieve.
And the momentum is spreading.
Fire stations across Alberta are taking on ice bucket challenges, stepping up for their fellow firefighter and encouraging their communities to get involved. Every video, donation and challenge is bringing more attention to ALS and the people and families affected by it.
Behind Every Challenge Is a Reason
ALS is a progressive disease that affects the nerve cells responsible for voluntary muscle movement. Over time, it can take away a person’s ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe.
A diagnosis brings changes that reach far beyond the person living with the disease. Families and caregivers must navigate new responsibilities, changing needs and difficult uncertainty.
At the ALS Society of Alberta, we help families navigate those changes through individualized support, connections to resources and our Equipment Loan Program. This program provides equipment such as mobility aids and communication devices, helping people living with ALS remain safe, comfortable and connected as their needs change.
The awareness generated by this campaign also helps more Albertans understand ALS and recognize why ongoing support matters.
Help Keep the Momentum Going
To the Chestermere firefighters, the stations taking on challenges across Alberta, and everyone donating and sharing: thank you. Your care for a colleague has inspired a growing show of solidarity.
You can be part of it:
- Donate to the firefighters’ fundraiser.
- Share the campaign with your friends, family and workplace.
- Take on an ice bucket challenge and encourage others to support the cause.
The original goal has been surpassed, but there is still so much we can accomplish together.
