Making It Possible #26 – Mikael & Frida Backlund

For more than a decade, Mikael and Frida Backlund have helped make possibilities a reality for Albertans affected by ALS. Inspired by Frida’s mother, Ann, and driven by a deep commitment to the ALS community, the Backlund’s have supported the ALS Society of Alberta since 2015 through generosity, compassion, and meaningful connection.

Over the years, Mikael and Frida have created unforgettable experiences for people navigating ALS, including hosting Calgary Flames game nights that have brought joy, laughter, and time together for over 100 families across Alberta! These evenings are about more than hockey. They are about creating moments of connection and memories that last forever.

Their impact extends far beyond these special experiences. Through initiatives like the Uncorked for ALS fundraiser, the Memories in Bloom hoodie campaign, and Achievements for Ann: The Backlund Fellowship, Mikael and Frida have helped raise awareness and critical funds for client services and ALS research in Alberta. Mikael has also turned his on-ice success into support for the ALS community through a long-standing commitment to donate $500 for every point he earns during the season, with the Calgary Flames Foundation matching his contribution. This year, Mikael recorded 43 points and generated significant support for Albertans living with ALS. Their dedication has helped create opportunities for progress in research while also ensuring those affected by ALS feel seen, supported, and connected.

In addition to donating funds and raising awareness, Frida has continued to organize events and initiatives that strengthen support for ALS families and research in Alberta. Together, Mikael and Frida have remained dedicated supporters through every season, always finding new ways to give back and stand beside Alberta’s ALS community.

Their kindness, generosity, and ongoing commitment continue to make a lasting difference across the province.

Thank you, Mikael and Frida, for continuing to help make it possible year over year.
